The Freakingood Story

How a coffee disaster led to something extraordinary

2022

The Disaster

It all started with the worst cup of coffee ever made. Our founder, Jake, was running late for the biggest meeting of his career when he grabbed "emergency" beans from the back of his pantry. The resulting brew was so catastrophically bad it not only cost him the meeting but sparked an obsession.

Jake had an epiphany that day: life is too short for mediocre coffee. In a city renowned for its coffee culture, why were so many of us accepting substandard beans in our daily cup?

The Obsession

What followed was a year-long deep dive into the world of specialty coffee. Jake traveled to coffee farms across Colombia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. He apprenticed with master roasters, studied bean varietals, and became certified in coffee grading.

He converted his garage into a makeshift roastery, experimenting with different beans, roasting profiles, and brewing methods. His neighbors became unwitting test subjects, receiving unlabeled bags of beans with detailed feedback forms.

The First Batch

After 372 test batches (and one small kitchen fire), the first official Freakingood blend was born. Jake invited 50 coffee enthusiasts to a blind tasting alongside beans from Melbourne's most renowned roasters. The results were clear – his creation wasn't just good, it was freaking good.

One participant's quote summed it up perfectly: "I actually laughed out loud when I tasted it. It's that freaking good." The name stuck immediately.

Freakingood is Born

With the help of three friends who believed in the vision (and the taste), Freakingood Coffee officially launched in early 2024. We opened our small-batch roastery in Melbourne's north, committed to freshness, ethical sourcing, and creating coffee that makes people do a double-take.

Our premise was simple: we would only sell beans we were genuinely excited about drinking ourselves. No compromises on quality, no cutting corners on sourcing, and absolute transparency about our process.

Where We Are Now

Today, we're a small but growing team united by our passion for exceptional coffee. We roast in small batches multiple times per week to ensure ultimate freshness. Our beans are shipped within 24 hours of roasting, and we've developed a loyal following of coffee lovers who share our belief that coffee should be more than just a caffeine delivery system – it should be an experience.

That disastrous cup of coffee changed everything. And we're on a mission to make sure nobody ever has to drink coffee like that again.
